Fourth Northern European Conference on Emergency and Disaster Studies (NEEDS) June 10-12, Uppsala (Sweden)

The fourth edition of the Northern European Conference on Emergency and Disaster Studies has been hosted by Uppsala University, and organised by the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology and the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science. The conference took place on 10–12 June 2019.

NEEDS 2019 aimed to explore the challenges of crisis and disaster research and intervention from an interdisciplinary perspective. The conference wishes to harness its broad, interdisciplinary expertise by gathering crisis and disaster researchers from academic institutions and practitioners from the crisis and disaster management community to build networks and to discuss the most pressing issues in disaster research across the academic and practical disciplines.

Panels focused on topics such as disaster risk reduction, community response, crisis communication and social media, resilience, crisis governance, social networks, humanitarian aid, and disaster tales and popular culture. Dr Tommaso Natoli (member of the IEUDL teaching staff) presented his research on ‘Regionalisation and sub-regionalisation of disaster management and the concept of solidarity” as part of the Law and Policy session.
